The Jets Will Hire Spagnuolo

The abruptness of it is what puzzled me.

Why so abrupt for Mangini? Especially when Jets owner Woody Johnson didn't have a particular reason for the firing.

Johnson:
`I don't think it was one thing. It was just Mike's and my judgment that we had to go in a different direction. There's nothing specific that you can put -- it's a call that we made and hopefully it's correct.

So it's not any one thing, no particular issue about Mangini. That makes it even more likely that it is triggered by something else, like the availability of coaches under contract, like Spagnuolo, for interviews for head coaching positions. It's done first thing in the morning on Monday, which is the irst opportunity available to schedule an interview with an NFL assistant coach. All eyes immediately turned to Brett Favre as the cause of this, but that's just part of the halo effect of his cornpone personality cult. The biggest factor is obviously timing. Assistant coaches for playoff teams, like the Giants defensive coordinator Spagnuolo, have this 1 week window right now in which they can interview for head coaching jobs, and I think Mangini was most likely fired with this timing in mind so that they could interview Spagnuolo right now, if he was fired to interview Spagnuolo, then Spagnuolo is probably going to have to f up that interview to miss out on the job.

It's Spagnuolo.
